Notebook_GuidelinesPosted by Terese Wignot, 9/3/02 at 12:32:13 PM. Notebook: (40%)The notebooks will follow guidelines which would be required if you were working in an industrial laboratory. The notebook must be bound. (For our purposes a scientific notebook is not required, any bound copybook will suffice but the pages must be numbered.) Each page of the notebook that contains an experimental write up must be signed, dated and witnessed (5 points). Your fellow classmates will serve as witnesses (peer reviewers) that will be described below. The first page will serve as a table of contents. Each experimental write up should be written so anyone, including yourself, could repeat the experiment from your notebook. Experimental write-ups will contain: Title: A concise title of the experiment. (5) Purpose: A short, 2-3 sentences, description of why the experiment is being done. (5) Materials: A list of chemicals/reagents and equipment required for the procedure. (10) Procedure: A step-by-step description of the experiment. The steps should be numbered and complete sentences should be used for the description. Do not simply copy the procedure from the lab manual. Condense the given procedure into steps you understand and can follow. (20) Results: The observations and data resulting from the actual experiment. Observations should be given in sentence form. Data should be given in table form. (30/20) Calculations: Any calculation relevant to the data. If necessary. (0/10) Conclusion: A paragraph containing comments on the results. Questions to be addressed in the conclusion are: Did the experiment work? Were the results expected? If the experiment was to be repeated, what improvements on the procedure would be made? If the experiment did not work, why? How could the error be corrected? (30).
