Main Street
This photograph captures the remnants of yet another closed local institution. Founded on September 10, 1884 by F.M. Kirby, this "five and dime" was a thriving part of Main Street Wilkes-Barre until its closure in 1993. (Photographer: Amanda Cawley, taken on October 3, 2005 at 10:25 AM.)
This is a picture of the main entrance to Boscov's department store. Wilkes-Barre is the smallest city in the United States to have a free standing department store. Department stores like Boscov's once dominated central city retailing when downtown was the commercial and economic center of the city.
