Franklin Street
The comer of Market and Franklin streets was a busy place during the prime of downtown Wilkes-Barre. There were four banks located on this intersection. In addition, there were several coal companies located in the same buildings as the banks. These buildings are very elaborate and large, as the banks and coal companies wanted to create an impressive and intimidating atmosphere around these lavish buildings. This photograph was taken by Drexel Siok at 9:05 am on October 2,2005. It is a picture of the Westmoreland Club on South Franklin Street in Wilkes-Barre. This is still a private club today and was built as a place for the elite of Wilkes-Barre to meet in the city's glory days.
The Osterhout Free Library is located on 71 South Franklin Street in
Wilkes-Barre. Named for Isaac Smith Osterhout, this library has
always served as a hub of information through the years. With an
ever-expanding range of services it will continue to do so in the
centuries to come. This picture was taken by Christopher Spano at
approximately 10:29am on October 3th, 2005, across the street from the
library.
