THE SUN - EARTH CONNECTION![]()
At the conclusion of this report you will hopefully have gained new insight and appreciation into the intricacies of the operation of our nearest star. It is well to keep in mind that for all of its spectacular power, violence, and fury, our sun is just that, an ordinary star. Nature has duplicated this performance about 400 billion times in our galaxy alone, and there are perhaps a hundred billion galaxies. Yet in our own solar system, sitting at the outer edge of our galaxy, our sun plays out a spectacularly important, life sustaining and modifying role for our little planet. It is the giver of energy, light and life to our world. Much more than this, it influences our daily lives with extraordinary atmospheric displays, and impacts our modern technology in ways that are unpredictable and potentially hazardous to we who have grown dependent upon science and technology to sustain our lives. Hopefully, you have gained a greater understanding and respect for the star that gave rise to and presides over our lives, while exerting a profound influence upon us in ways we are just now beginning to understand and appreciate. If you wish to learn more about our sun or any aspect of space science and/or exploration check our the website of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, http://www.nasa.gov. Also available from NASA for use by teachers is a CD ROM entitled SOHO - Exploring the Sun containing the item named Dynamic Sun on the Resources page. This disk also contains the Quicktime movies that are needed to animate the pdf file. Information and ordering procedures are available at http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/cdrom/exploring/, or you can download the contents of the disk(a very large file) as per instructions for the PC or Mac.
