THE SUN - EARTH CONNECTION

The Task

Your task is to describe the sun's structure and energy source, identify and define its major physical features, and describe how each of these affect the solar wind and ultimately the earth. Include a timetable of the sun's activity indicating when the next period of maximum and minimum activity is expected.

Your final report will include:

1. A description of the the sun's energy source and internal structure. This may include but not be limited to images and/or diagrams.

2. The names and descriptions of the major physical features visible on the sun.

3. An explanation of how these features are related to the sun's activity and the solar wind.

4. Descriptions and explanations of phenomena created by the interaction of the solar wind with Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere, and how these effects may impact upon our modern technology.

5. A description of the time scale of the sun's activity and your recommendations for monitoring the sun's activity to better inform the electrical power and communications industries and satellite controllers of solar events affecting their services.
