Response Paper Guidelines

As promised, here are guidelines for generating an extra Response paper of 2 - 4 pages. This is not a research paper. It should develop and elaborate on some response you had to one of the texts we have read. Up to 100 points will be added to your grade if you decide to submit a Response Paper. There are several ways you might construct a Response:

  • Use the Constructing a Topic guidelines to develop an argument you wish to pursue about one or more of the works we have read.
  • Use another student's Discussion Topic on this Discussion Board as a jumping off place for your own response. You might disagree or agree with the responder and argue in a more developed way that the claim he/she has made is viable or flawed.
  • Write a detailed explication of a sonnet written by one of the writers we have studied: do a close reading and support your analysis by citing lines from the text.
  • Compare/contrast a Petrarchan sonnet with one of the English sonnets in our book.

I will evaluate your response on:

  • The energy with which you respond to the texts, that is, the depth of your reading and thinking about the text.
  • The support you provide for your argument: the quality and quantity of textual evidence you provide from you primary source.
  • The clarity of your thinking as evidenced by 'reader-friendly' cues you provide to help the reader follow your train of thought.
