Basic information about the online version of History 101
I try to offer a minimum of one online section of this course every semester. As many students ask about this class, here's the deal about how it functions. The course basically works as a structured independent study. All you have is a textbook, my lecture notes and some documents posted online. I give a short assignment basically every week for the first seven weeks or so (to get everyone up to speed) and then there are three longer assignments due for the remainder of the semester. Other than the due dates, the course has no fixed times.
Some students like the course (especially those who have complex work or class schedules) but many claim it is harder than the in-class version. Usually, if you are good at reading and understanding issues on your own, the course works well. If, however, you find class discussions and lectures important to refining your understanding of material, the class can be tough.
