The pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is a method to control the power electronics circuits. The basic idea is to control the duty cycles of the switches in such a way that a load sees a controllable average voltage.

Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) represents an emerging topology with a scalable technology making high voltage and power capability possible. The MMC is built up by identical, but individually controllable submodules. The converter can act as a controllable voltage source, with a large number of available discrete voltage steps.
