Susquehanna Valley Local Section

The Susquehanna Valley Local Section has developed a number of awards. These awards are designed to recognize thsoe within our section who have helped to promote chemistry, the chemical professions, and the section. More information on the awards and the nomination processes will be added to this page soon. Please check back when you visit the site.

The Joseph Priestley Service Award - The Section established this award to recognize outstanding community involvement and outreach activities within our section membership. The award criteria are broadly defined so both "worker-bees" as well as those in formal leadership roles are eligible. It is hoped that this continuing award will stimulate community involvement in the section, and provide examples of community-active role models for the younger professionals in our section. The award is normally awarded annually and includes a modest monetary award ($100) and a handsome plaque. When possible, the award is given to the recipient at our annual awards banquet (the May monthly meeting).

Outstanding High School Chemistry Teacher Award - The Section established this award to recognize outstanding teaching of chemistry in the high school setting. This award is also given to the recipient at our annual awards banquet (the May monthly meeting).

The David H. Frederick Memorial Awards in High School Chemistry - This series of awards recognizes the commitment to excellence in demonstrated by high school students in their studies of chemistry. These awards are also given to the recipient at our annual awards banquet (the May monthly meeting). Students must complete an exam in order to earn recognition in this category.

First Year Exam Award

United States National Chemistry Olympiad - Students must be nominated by their high school teacher in order to particpate in the USNCO. No more than two students from any one high school and no more than eight students from the entire section may compete in this event. Students who compete in the USNCO are eligible to be selected as members of the United States team for the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICO). The national exam includes three parts. Part I is a 90-minute multiple-choice test. Part II is a 105 minute written response section. Part III is 90-minute laboratory practical composed of two exercises. The total testing time for the two written sections and lab practical will be 4 hours and 45 minutes. These awards are also given to the recipient at our annual awards banquet (the May monthly meeting).

College Awards - Each college or university within the section selects the one graduating senior chemistry or biochemistry major that best represents the best qualities of a beginning chemical professional. These awards are also given to the recipient at our annual awards banquet (the May monthly meeting).
