Ligand Effects in Titanium-Mediated C-C Bond Formations

Low-valent titanium species constitute the reagent of choice for Pinacol and McMurry coupling reactions, which are among the most powerful methods for constructing carbon-carbon bonds, and have served as the key step in the synthesis of various natural and synthetic products. Organic synthesis applications of well-characterized low-valent titanium complexes and developments in mechanistic understanding of reductive coupling reactions of carbonyl compounds will be discussed. In addition, studies aimed at the development of thermally stable Ti(IV) and Ti(II) species that have potential in controlled ethylene polymerization and oligomerization will be discussed.

Professor Ladipo received his Ph.D. from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1991 and worked as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Missouri - St. Louis and the University of Vermont until 1994. Dr. Ladipo joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1994 and carries out research in the areas of transition metal chemistry and catalysis. He has been received a number of awards including an NSF CAREER grant and a prestigious University of Kentucky "Top Ten Teacher" Award.
