Roofing and Testing the Roll-Off

Once the rafters were framed, plywood gussets were added to each. I used Ondura roofing material because it is significantly lighter than standard roofing material and can be applied in a fashion similar to metal roofing. Ondura comes in 4'x 79" sheets, so no cutting was needed. The roof took 8 sheets at about $12 a sheet. In another move to lighten the roof, I attached 12" wide plywood purlins across the rafters rather than full plywood sheeting.

After completing the roofing, I built the roll-off rails on the east end of the shed. These were constructed out of 4"x4" pressure treated timbers attached to the shed, as the main rail, and as the rear supports. Once these were finished, and before I built the remaining railing, it was time for a test. This was a moment of truth because at this point I had managed to build a shed. If the roof didn't roll off, I figured I'd widen the door and put the lawnmower and chipper shredder inside. Fortunately, the roof worked!

With the roof working, I completed the rails by adding a 5/4" x 6" deck plank to each side.

On to the Painting!
