Once you are on Route 309 North:

Take the Cross Valley Expressway (SR 309) to exit 5/6, Luzerne Borough. Take a right at the light at the bottom of the ramp. Take a right at the next light. A left at the next stop sign puts you on Main Street. Drive North on Main Street to a four way stop sign. Continue straight ahead on Parry Street. Park near the hill in the Knights of Columbus parking lot on the right. Walk up the new sidewalk to the Luzerne Trailhead and start at the "Gateway to the Back Mountain" kiosk. Enjoy a spectacular "getaway" right in a population center of over 100,000 people.

Variety welcomes trail users in the first two miles: a waterfall, lengthy shady stretches, far reaching views and meadows with flowers. Scarlet tanagers, turkeys, and hawks have been observed. Trout are caught in Toby's Creek. Shops, cafes and restaurants offer many choices on the Luzerne Borough Main Street and a bike ride to Frances Slocum State Park is not too far away.

Welcome to the Back Mountain Trail!
