RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research is first based on work that I accomplished at SUNY-Stony Brook while working with Dr. Craig Evinger. I am currently using the blink reflex paradigm to investigate normal and abnormal functioning of the trigeminal system in humans. The trigeminal system is involved in processing sensory information from the face, neck and head. This system is activated when your eyes are irritated, when you have a toothache, or during a headache. The blink reflex is mediated by trigeminal input and thus, may serve as a psychophysiological measure of these phenomena.
A second line of projects that I am currently pursuing involves using the acoustic startle reflex in humans to investigate information processing, and specifically, attention.

My most recent publications were in the Journal of Neuroscience:

1. Reflex Excitability Regulates Prepulse Inhibition (2000) E.J. Schicatano, et al., pp. 4240-4247.

2. Lid Restraint Evokes Two Types of Motor Adaptation (2002) E.J. Schicatano, et al., pp.569-576.
