English 281: Survey of American Literature I

old2a: This course examines the major authors and themes in American literature to the Civil War. Topics covered will include: literature of discovery and exploration to 1620, Puritan literature and life, southern colonial literature and life, literature of the Early Republic, American romanticism, and antebellum experience. We will read selections from each of the major, 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th century authors represented in the anthology.
