English 398 Topics: American Humor

Course Description:

This course will examine the major traditions and creators of American humor to 1900. We will study satirical and burlesque traditions of the 17th and 18th centuries, humor of the Old Southwest, New England and urban humor, and the humor of Mark Twain. You will read works from a range of lesser known 19th century humorists such as T. B. Thorpe, Augustus Baldwin Longstreet, William Cox, T. C. Halliburton, and Marietta Holley, to more recognizable names like Franklin, Irving, Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Ambrose Bierce, and Mark Twain.
