| Dr. Case is a professor in both the Geoenvironmental Sciences & Engineering Department ("GSE") and the Biology Department. He teaches a wide array of courses in both freshwater and marine ecology which involve students in research projects on local aquatic issues. Students in his courses have the opportunity to expand their interests in marine sciences through a new Marine Sciences Concentration affiliated with either a Biology or EES Minor and the Marine Science Consortium at Wallops Island, Virginia. Dr. Case's research interests include the biogeochemical fate of heavy metals and anti-cancer drug residues in the aquatic environment.
Students under his supervision take courses in Limnology, Marine Ecology, and Field Studies at Wilkes University giving them unique opportunities to pursue advanced training in state-of-the-art sampling and analytical devices and protocols. The Limnology course offers access to not only traditional training in aquatic sciences but also includes experiences using new YSI real-time monitoring of natural waters for basic water quality parameters and applied geographic information techniques. The marine ecology course offers a field trip component to the Wallops Island, VA including oceanographic cruise experiences to measure marine productivity and to understand the impact of humans on coastal marine ecosystems. Field Studies courses feature miniprojects at the Ratchford Field Station and on the Susquehanna River learning to monitor water quality using both chemical and benthic invertebrate survey techniques.
