Podcasting

Podcasting is a method of publishing sound and small picture or video files to the Internet.  Podcasting is also a method used to time-shift audio broadcasts to individual listeners who want to broadcast radio shows on their own schedule. The original idea came from the desire to find a way to create audio versions of blogs. The producer of the files simply publishes files to a Web site that allows users to subscribe to a download service or to use access software to receive new files as they are created. More recently, the concept has extended into the education realm. One major university feels so strongly abut the potential of podcasting that school officials have begun distributing iPods to all incoming freshmen. Professors will be using iPods to communicate with students, share their class notes, PowerPoint slides, and much more. Can you think of advantages and disadvantages of using iPods or similar devices in the classroom? What are the implications of podcasting on K-12 education and this digital generation?

October Phi Delta Kappan

According to the article in the October Phi Delta Kappan (page 168), a good source for RSS news feeds can be found by clicking on the goto button at the end of this item. The article also discusses the US Department of Education publishes daily RSS feeds. You need a news reader to view the feeds. The address that you need to put into the news reader is: (www.ed.gov/rss/edgov.xml).

Some free news readers are NetNewsWire (Mac). You can get it at:

http://ranchero.com/netnewswire

For the PC, there are FeedReader, NewzCrawler or AmphetaDesk (this one can also be used for the Mac).

These news readers are separate programs from your browser. - goto
