Died June 23, 1998

Thomas Robert Richards, 83, a guest at Riverside Manor, Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born April 8, 1915, in Plymouth, he was the son of the late William and Mary Elizabeth (Griffiths) Richards.

A lifelong resident of the Wyoming Valley area, he was a graduate of Plymouth High School at the age of 15 and was honored as the valedictorian of the Class of 1931.

He received a bachelor's degree from Penn State University and a master's degree in mathematics from Bucknell University. His field of special interest was probability and statistics.

He was employed as a math and science teacher at Plymouth High School for seven years. He was employed by Michigan Technological University as a math and physics instructor for one year. He was last employed for more than 40 years as a math professor at Wilkes University and was chairman of the Math Department for many years.

He was a member of the Mathematical Association of America.

He was named as one of the top 10 greatest professors by the Wilkes University Alumni Magazine in 1993.

Surviving him is a sister, Ruth Richards, Wilkes-Barre.

Mr. Richards' dedication to teaching was legendary. In 1968, he was struck by an automobile on South Franklin Street in front of the Library. He limped along back to his classroom and taught two classes before allowing a colleague to take him to a hospital. It turned out that he had a broken ankle that day.

The Mathematics Reading Room at Wilkes University in SLC404 was named in his honor.

The obituary appeared in the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader.
