To some extent I agree that we should consider requiring ED 520. It is important information that teachers need to have. However, I also truly believe that we need to begin raising the standard for all of our master's programs. We are one of the few if not the only one I know that does not require research in the masters level. Claiming that folks will get it at the doctoral level I don't think is enough. There will be LOTS that do not go that route and saying they will get it there is a falsehood because most won't. I think having a research component and a strong writing portion in that will go to soldify that this is a quality program and we remove the likelihood of someone saying - "I went through my whole program and never wrote a paper." UGH! If we are graduating students that don't know how to reasearch a topic and how to be consumers of research we are doing them a disservice. Maybe the research course in the master's program is different than the research course in the doctoral program as maybe they serve different purposes. In fact, theyprobably do serve different purposes.
