Alex's Diary

Hello,

My name is Alex Kashatus and I am a senior at Wilkes University. I will be taking you on a journey through the life of an actor during a production. In this journey we will be going through the play Julius Caesar in which I am playing the character of Marcus Brutus.

        First Entry:                                                          3/31/03-9:26AM

It has been a rough couple weeks so far in the beginning stages of our production. We have all of our blocking and we are in the polishing stages of the production. Polishing is very tiring because you think you know what you are talking aboout to find out that you have no idea. Joe Dawson the director of our production is not afraid to tell you if you are saying the line correctly and with the right inflection of speech. Not to mention the emotional life of the character. Brutus is a complex character in which he has many different levels. He is indisicive, passionate, loving, a soldier. These are just some of the things. For example we worked on Friday night the scene between Brutus and Cassius. Where she comes in angry at me for acusing her of taking bribes and I am angry at her for selling herself short. This scene goes from pure anger into regret and sadness. It was a tough night.

The constant change of emotion in these characters is the struggle for the actor. People think "wow it must be really hard to learn 800 some lines ....." no its putting emotion and passion into the lines. Thats what keeps us actors up at night. We do not want to act for you we want to live for you. People come to see theater for life, the human condition on stage. They want to see what a person feels not what they say. Yes the words are important but if there is nothing emotionally attached then it is just words. Thats what Tiffany and I were talking about the other day. She said to me " I dont want to be an imposter." I totally agree with her no one wants to act on stage they want to live.

Second Entry:

Sorry that this entry is coming on so late but its been a busy couple of weeks. The performances were great evryone really loved the show. It was hard to see how we were going to do with our audience because it was a heavy emotional show. Everyone loved it thought and they couldn't stop talking about it. It was a big sucsess to be n a show that went over so well. I am very happy that everyone that got to see it was happy. This is a way to conclude your senior year with a great performance. Thank you and i am sory that I didn't get a chance to write more on this journal.
