Step 1 - Create the basic page

To create the basic page at Wilkes, a command has been created by Dr. Fred Sullivan to help. You need to log in to wilkes1 and type makehomepage. This will create a directory in your account named webdocs with the necessary permissions set. In the webdocs directory will be a single file named index.html. This is the name that must   be used for your main home page. You can create links from it to other pages (which you can name whatever you prefer), but the main home page must be named index.html.

Below, you type the two words in boldface, the computer types the rest:

wilkes1 > makehomepage

Making your home page available requires echo making your home directory accessible to everyone. This does not mean that your files will be readable by everyone. It only means that if the permissions of a file make it readable by everyone, and someone knows the name of the file, then they will be able to read it. However, others will not be able to list the files in your home directory.

Do you wish to proceed? Please answer yes or no: yes

A directory called webdocs has been created in your home directory. /home/mathcs/staff/koch/webdocs

A directory called webdocs has been created in your home directory.

Your home page has been created in the webdocs directory. It is called index.html.

If you create any additional files and link them to your home page, you must make them readable by everyone. You may use the command chmod a+r * in the webdocs directory to do this.

Your home page is accessible using the following URL: http://wilkes1.wilkes.edu/~koch from other sites, or just http://wilkes1/~koch from within the Wilkes University network.

Enjoy!

Step 2 - Look at it with Netscape

Start Netscape. Choose Open Location in the File menu. Type http://wilkes1.wilkes.edu/~username  into the text box (where username  is your username). This should bring up a page that has the following:

Your Name 's Home Page

This home page is under construction.

Step 3 - Get the html, compare

You can choose Page Source in the View menu. This will download the html text from wilkes1 and open a text editor for you. Examine the html tags and see what tags produce the large header, for instance.

Step 4 - Modify text and save

You can then edit this file and save it to your local disk (use the same name - index.html).

Step 5 - Transfer page to wilkes1

Once you have made changes, you must send it back to wilkes1. You can use any of the techniques mentioned on a previous slide (i.e., Fetch, Anarchie, ftp, copy-paste).
