Backgrounds allow you to use an image that is repeated as a backgound for your html text. The smaller the image, the more times it is repeated. Be careful with backgrounds - it can be very hard to read text on anything but the very lightest background. The situation is like when the Mac came out with different fonts and styles. People will try any background with any text and get horrible results.

Background color is even simpler. You specify one color that is painted over the whole background. The weird part is you specify the color as "rrggbb" where the letters r, g and b represent hexadecimal ("hex" from 0 to 9 and A, B, C, D, E, F) digits for the intensity of red (rr), green (gg) and blue (bb). This background color is "FFFFFF" or pure white. Here is a table of Colors and their Hex Equivalents.

One way to try different background colors and text colors is the HTML ColorMeister.

If you find an interesting background, you can get yourself a copy. View Source and get the URL of the background pattern. Then do an Open Location with this URL. It will bring the background graphic in as an image and you can click and hold to copy it to your disk.
